Salute to the Occupy Raleigh 20 and 8

Blog/Flog transcript is below:

The Occupy movement that began on Wall Street about one month ago and spread throughout this nation and across the globe, made a splash in Raleigh, North Carolina on Saturday, October 15, 2011. It culminated after dusk with the arrest of 20 courageous and bold economic freedom fighters.

Held on the south side of the Capitol Building grounds on a pleasant autumn day, the demonstration was a successful and orderly event, with a crowd at its zenith which I estimated to be at around two thousand. In contrast with a few other Occupy rallies elsewhere which were marred by vandalism, violence, and pepper spray, the Raleigh event was remarkably orderly… loud, but not boisterous… emotionally heart-felt, but not fanatical.

Lack of violent confrontations can be attributed to the following: 1) a well mannered, responsible, and respectful group of participants; 2) state and city police officers who comported themselves professionally and with restraint; and 3) the presence of legal observers, trained by the National Lawyers Guild, to document and record circumstances surrounding arrests and activities that might invoke a physical response by the ever-present police.

Unfortunately the success of meaningful movements often requires sacrifices by those who are disenfranchised and fighting for their rights and the rights of those similarly disadvantaged.

On Saturday evening October 15, 2011, nineteen brave individuals stood their ground in a peaceful protest on the state grounds of the Capitol Building. In doing so, they were arrested by police on orders given from those in power... those bent on breaking the backbone and resolve of the movement in order to maintain the slanted and immoral status quo wherein the rich get richer and everyone else gets poorer.

The brave Occupy Raleigh 20, who sacrificed for the 99 percent of Raleigh citizens who are being victimized by an economic system that enslaves most of them, are deserving of the gratitude and respect of us all.

Now a tribute to some of the Occupy Raleigh 20…

Since the fateful arrests of October 15, 2011, Occupy Raleigh protesters have maintained a presence on the south side of the Capitol Building grounds. Although moved from the Capitol grounds that night, protesters were assured that their rights to assemble on the public city sidewalk surrounding it would be guaranteed. So the faithful, diehard, and determined protesters occupied the seldom traversed sidewalk 24/7. Day in and day out. In the warmth of the sun and during the harsh inclement weather.

To better enable themselves to have endure a more comfortable existence, the Occupiers set up tables upon which to store supplies, documents, food supplies and blankets… all well out of the way of the few sidewalk pedestrians. Barricades used to prevent Occupiers from trespassing on the Capitol grounds were utilized to support the numerous signs, placards, and banners which espoused the main grievance of economic inequality and corporate greed. The sidewalk occupation was nicely maintained, clean, and posed no threat.

Occupiers had peacefully maintained a vigil on the sidewalk for more than a week and a half without any trouble, and it became evident to those in power that the movement was not going to just go away. Neither time, rain and cold winds, the oppressive dark nights, nor an intimidating show of force by authorities were able to budge the Occupiers from the pavement. So, with the city sidewalks being in use, the state of North Carolina, under Democratic Governor Bev Perdue, stepped in.

Moses Carey Jr., the Secretary of the mysterious North Carolina Department of Administration issued an order to the Occupiers… using the pretense of complying with an ambiguous statute to maintain and care for public property. The true intent was to disrupt and put and end to the occupation.

Given but just a few hours to meet the conditions set forth in the order, the Occupiers complied, and all tables, boxes, supplies, and other items were disassembled and removed from the sidewalk. However, the demonstrators remained and continued their peaceful protest.

One occupier was Margaret Schucker, who was disabled with a bad back, a condition exacerbated by standing for long periods. So she sat peacefully in her own folding chair, clearly not obstructing sidewalk traffic. The ubiquitous police force, however, demanded that she not sit down. She was threatened with arrest if she continued to remain seated. However, like Rosa Parks who refused to relinquish her seat in the bus, Margaret Schucker refused, as well. And, like the Civil Rights heroine, Ms. Schucker, amid the outrage of other protesters was handcuffed like a criminal and placed in the paddy wagon.

Seven other brave and sympathetic protesters, who sat or linked arms in solidarity with Ms. Schucker, were also cuffed and herded like cattle into the paddy wagon by police.

Now the biased media, which gets its orders from the well-heeled avaricious upper echelon executives, as usual skewed the story in favor of the top 1%... which is not surprising since these head honchos with their embarrassingly excessive salaries, are amongst the 1%.

ABC-11 News even went so far as to “blame the victims,” by bringing up the cost to taxpayers for providing overtime for the police. Larry Stogner, ABC-11 anchor stated that their investigative I-Team found out that it cost $22,000 “in taxpayer money” for policing the October 15, 2011 event, and that the police bill for overtime ran $1,500 per day.

First of all, had budget saving measures by Republican politicians not decimated the ranks of the police force, there would be no need to pay overtime. Secondly, it was not the Occupiers who assigned and scheduled the police officers to maintain a round-the-clock show of force at the sidewalk. The demonstrators have always been peaceful and cooperative with the authorities.

Instead of enforcing the law, protecting the public, fighting crime and taking criminals off the streets, Raleigh’s men in blue apparent overriding duty was to arrest a law-abiding disabled woman who was merely sitting in her own folding lawn chair.

Like the twenty before them, the latest eight Occupy Raleigh occupants gave their fullest demonstration measure… and were arrested for this just cause. They too, deserve our utmost respect and gratitude. Now, a tribute to these heroes… the Occupy Raleigh Eight.

So, the "Occupy" movement made a splash...What, exactly, were their goals?

I recommend you take a few minutes and read this:

I find it all rather silly. If you think that "corporate greed" is an issue with say, the banking industry (I do), Do something about it -- stop using banks, and place your money in a credit union. Don't b*tch and whine about it, do something -- but do something meaningful.

Ah, yet another example of Sid's statement that his focus is on Nifong. Not! Hilarious, Sid...aboslutely crackup funny.
Now, we have the infamous Sidney RunaMouth giving us his platitude ladden higher-ground morality lecture. Oh, please...... comparing these occupy types to Rosa Parks?? that is a flat out insult to a true heroine of the Civil Rights movement.
I don't give two hoots if people want to stage a protest and engage in civil disobedience. hooray for them. but, you, Sid....pontificating about them? Wow, talk about hypocritical.
I agree with another poster. You don't like banks, take your money out. You want wealth redistribution. Let it start at home, fella. Take the cash out of your checking account, go downtown, stand on a corner, and hand out the money. Take a look at the log in your eye, Sid, before you start whining about the splinter in another's eye.

Sid and the "Occupy" movement are making a point. The too big to fail banks and brokerage houses have engaged in a sort of wealth redistribution that is ruinous to our country and our economy. The banks and brokerages have rigged the government and the legal system so that they get all the rewards and take no risks. For example, the Federal Reserve and the federal government through different initiatives have loaned the too big to fail banks and brokerages $1.3 trillion. Those too big to fail banks and brokerages were supposed to take that money and loan it in the economy. Instead, they used it to buy treasuries that pay about 3% interest. That results in a subsidy of $39 billion per year to the industry. At the same time, government is doing nothing to shore up the finances of ordinary Americans.

Personally, my only account is in a credit union and I do not use credit cards, debit cards, or any plastic... only cold hard cash. As far as doing something about it, I am. I am enlightening people who are evidently not as enlightened as you. If you'll notice at the closing of the flog, I urge viewers to move their finances from banks to credit unions!

So, you think it's okay for the top 1% to own 43% of the nation's wealth... the top 5% to account for nearly three quarters of the nation's wealth, while the bottom 80% is steadily losing it's grip on just 7% of the nation's wealth? The greedy upper crust is increasing it's hold on wealth at the expense of the majority of people, many of whom have lost their jobs, are homeless, or are in serious debt. The avaricious Wall Streeters are responsible, in large measure, for the worldwide economic collapse. The United States would be a much better place if some of the ill-gotten gains that the wealthy are hoarding away were distributed to those in need. The CEOs and executives are focused on the bottom line, which unfortunately means cutting out as many jobs as possible and raising prices. Economics 101.

Anon at 8:51 AM, you are misapplying Dave Ramsey's quote. Sid is talking about ill gotten gains, not gains justly arrived at. With the exception of the too big to fail banks and brokerages, we do take away ill gotten gains. The problem is, the Obama administration has failed and refused to prosecute the too big to fail banks and brokerages and their top leadership. That is the root of the problem. Obama is bought and paid for by the very trouble makers Sid and the OWS crowd likes to rail against. Until we replace Obama and his cronies, nothing will change.

I believe what I said was that I have no issue with people wanting to protest, etc. I also made no comment about the validity of the alledged basis for the protest...i.e., too big to fail banks, getting subsidy from Mr. Give it all Away while he advocates closeted socialism. If somebody wants to protest, that's their right. What I DID comment on is the hypocrisy of Sid's moralizing and slobbering praise for the folks in downtown Raleigh, and the Occupy protests, in general. From what I have seen of the Occupy types, there ARE legit people in some of the sites, with legit causes for protest. There are also people who have forgotten they are on other people's property, and turning beautiful public parks into mud pits and trash dumps. If Sid is so all-fired up about the lacrosse guys urinating in public and engaging in his favorite word, "debauchery", I would suggest he might take a closer look at the drunken, public property destructive, using a tree for a toilet behavior of SOME of the Occupy protestors, including SOME of the people in Raleigh.

I happen to agree that subsidizing banks and giving out massive hand-outs to car companies has obviously NOT worked to produce the real meaningful longterm jobs we must develop and support. I also agree that the Occupy protests have been somewhat effective in putting the spotlight on corporate greed. My opinions on this subject are just my opinions....worth nothing more and nothing less than anybody else's.

Hey -
So you’re camping out at your local “occupy” protest and through the smoky haze you spot the girl of your dreams. She’s absolute perfection with her purple mohawk, nose rings and unshaven legs. But you need a good pick up line! Here’s a few proven winners:

1) “What time do you get off not working?”

2) “Your parents’ basement or mine?”

3) “We have so much in common, I don’t know why I’m here either”

4) “You remind me of a female Janeane Garafalo”

and my favorite

5) “Just got my Pell Grant & food stamps. LET’S PARTY!

Yep, poster, Amen. My favorite remarks from an Occupy protestor so far came this past weekend. Interviewed in a Boston park, three obviously stoned/drunk protestors said, "We want Bill Clinton to be President again, and, Legalize Weed, and, (the best of all), If Homo Fags can Marry, why can't Priests?"

God bless America. Shazaaam!!

So far, I've only spent one night at the site.. the sidewalk on the south side of the Capitol. Most of the time I've been at home working on the flog I've just uploaded. When I do have the time, I do plan on camping out and lending support to help achieve economic equality for the 99%, which undoubtably includes you.

Go for it, Sid. Your right to do so. I happen to think that doing something more substantive about our economy than carrying signs and hollering at people is a better use of my time. Again, if you are in favor of Obama's brand of "wealth redistribution" (closeted socialism), then let it begin in your wallet. Just start handing out that cold hard cash in downtown Raleigh. Rather than protesting on a street corner, I am doing everything I can, in my small company, to hire and keep as many people as I can.....Our profit margin is non-existent because of Obama's regulation strangulation and Obama's healthcare debacle.
Seems to me that there are a whole lot of Obamazoombies using these so-called protests as nothing more than vote-recruitment.

Anon, I'm like you, a small businessman. Like you, I saw my health insurance premiums jump in 2011 and my group carrier says another big jump is in the works for 2012.

I also saw a huge increase in regulatory workload with the 1099 requirement. Frankly, I take the position that if I apy an invoice by check or with a credit card, I don't 1099 the vendor. If I get audited, I guess I'll take my lumps. I think the 1099 expansion is a reflection of Obama's over-reliance on academics. Instead of turning to people with actual experience, he gets his advice from college professors. Yet another reason to retire Obama in 2012.

Agree 100% Walt. We are drowning in paperwork, increased health premium expense (which we try not to pass along to our employees), nonsense regulations, inspections, and absolutely USELESS government interference. We are trying to keep our employees working! We don't get handouts, bailouts, tax breaks, subsidies, grants, gifts, coupons, or any other D*$! help from anybody. We are trying to keep our business afloat by taking care of our customers AND our employees. I have no use for Hollywood airheads and professional protestors who rant about corporate greed while they cash in personally. I am also deeply offended by the anti-jewish rhetoric coming out of the OWS crowds. Want to fix our economy? Here's a message to Washington.... Know what, if the people who currently have custody think it is in the best interest of her CHILDREN to visit their mother, then I have no problem with it. Not gonna happen apparently. However , to let her out of jail at this point, on a 50K bond, with a murder charge, is ridiculous. The children are apparently getting good care and some stability which they must badly need. Their interests are far more a priority than her maternal urges.
Walt how long do you think it will be before mangum faces her day in court? Year? Will Shella try for a change of venue?

Everything you wrote is slanderous.Crystal Mangum is not an alcoholic or a drug addict. She has never been convicted of possession of drugs, theft, prostitution or arson. Superior Court Judge Abe Jones ruled the three charges of contributing to the abuse or neglect of her children would rise and fall on how the jury handled the arson charge. He promised to dismiss the abuse charge if the jury doesn't find Mangum guilty of arson. The jury got it wrong. When it hung on the arson charge the state decided not to procede. Crystal could easily appeal the contributing to delinquency charge on that basis. Jones himself stated, in giving her no penalty, that evidence showed her to be a good Mother.

Sounds to me like you should be embracing the Occupy movement. You are definitely not in the 1% and I doubt that your pay ratio exceeds 2 times that of your lowest salaried employee. It is the bigwigs in the mega-corporations with executive compensation hundreds of times that of their entry level employees who are targets of the movement. You pay higher insurance premiums to pay the egregious salaries of the CEOs of the insurance companies. Same is probably true of higher prices for goods you may need to purchase for your business.

Small businesses, such as yours, deserve tax breaks, and you should receive inventory at reasonable prices. This would be do-able if the wealthiest individuals and mega-corporations paid their fair share in taxes.

Your problem is that you do not know which side of the issue you are on, and the true identity of your enemy. The media has done a good job in bamboozling the public. Consider yourself bamboozled.

I applaud your work ethic, however, I disagree with you with regards to "welfare" and "handouts." It is the money-hungry CEOs who are rolling in the dough who are responsible for outsourcing jobs, shipping manufacturing overseas, and cutting their employees in order to get a bigger bottom line. These guys are more interested in satisfying their shareholders than their customers.

I would prefer to see government money go to a poor family, whose breadwinners have been jobless, and do without food, medicine, and a place to stay, rather than for government money and tax relief to line the coffers of the caviar-champagne ilk.

Like you, I am not happy with the government bailout of the banks, as they have shown how totally irresponsible they are.

Sid, I don't think you really grasp what is going on in the economy. Outsourcing and paycutting is in no way intended to satisfy shareholders. Those things are done to increase top executive pay. We, the owning class have seen very little increase in our dividends and certainly the long term performance of the stock market has not justified the huge pay we have doled out to top management.

"However, I would rather have a socialist in charge of the country than a capitalist who is interested in boosting the wealth of the upper tier at the expense of the many... including small business owners such as yourself."

I see no proof that Obama is a socialist, more of a big government economy stifling liberal. However Obama, more than being a liberal, is an opportunist who is more than willing to sell his office to the highest bidder.

As far as having a capitalist over Obama, give me the capitalist any day. A capitalist may continue Obama's handouts to the too big to fail banks and brokerages, or he may be smart enough to end them. But, with Obama, we know what we have and that's Wall Street's bought and paid for water boy.

Obama has WRITTEN about his educational roots in and strong belief in socialist forms of government. He has also repeatedly used the "wealth redistribution" phrase in describing his plans for so-called "hand up" programs he espouses. He is clearly socialist in his thinking IF you agree with me that the definition of socialism is the classic one....defined in modern terms as "taking from the bucket of those who have and adding to the bucket of those who have not, until the buckets are equal.....with, of course, the taker-giver ALWAYS being the largest governmental agent....in this case, the federal versus state, county or city government.". Obama appears, to some, not to be socialist in his leanings because he has endorsed the folly of the subsidy to selected corporate failures. However, that strategy has its real roots in vote-getting, not in a fundamental commitment to economic recovery and sustained equal opportunity for all. Tell you what, I do not see a single candidate in the field today who would get my vote. Not one

I do not agree with that definition, nor do I think any serious economist does. I hew to the classic definition of socialism from Merriam Webster: any of various economic and political theories advocating collective or governmental ownership and administration of the means of production and distribution of goods.

By that definition, Obama is not a socialist. Even by the modernized European definition that limits government ownership of the means of production and distribution to some top percentage, Obama is not a socialist. Indeed, while he advocates for the redistribution of wealth, the redistribution he seems interested in carrying out is from the poor and middle class to the very wealthy. That is my biggest problem with Barry, he talks left and happily sells his office to the too big to fail banks and brokerages.

Walt, then points of agreement here are (from my perspective),
1. Obama sold out his supposed commitment to the poor in exchange for votes. (big surprise....)
2. Obama thinks more government is better government; more regulation is better than less
3. Obama thinks the recipe for crawling out of our economic hole is "tax and spend"....with spending done by government, on government's terms, in programs of government's choice

Where we disagree, then, is whether we think he is a closeted socialist. I remain convinced that this is his true leaning, but he is also clever and a pragmatic.....follow the money, follow the votes.

Just received a new set of federal regulations concerning our business transactions and product safety requirements. First impression is that meeting incremental requirements will add at least 8% to our operating expense with ZERO opportunity to recover costs. We will NOT pass this expense increase along to our customers and we will NOT punish our employees for Obama's STUPID fetish federal control. Sid, an evil white person/business owner will take it in the shorts on this one. We care about JOBS for our employees and we do NOT have time to stand on a sidewalk and wave a piece of cardboard. Boy, how I would love to tell the socialist-in-chief what I think of him!

Here's some news for ya, Sid -- Your pal Victoria Peterson is even declining to comment on her involvement with Crystal Mangum:

I am not sure he has a recipe for crawling out of our economic hole. Which is one huge problem and a more than adequate reason to replace him. As near as I can tell, Sperling, Summers and Geitner on the economic side and Jarret and Axelrod on the political side are telling him that the only way out of the current jobless recovery is to bail out the too big to fail banks and brokerages.

While you and I may disagree over the wisdom of tax and spend, borrow and spend, inflate and spend or cut and spend, Obama seems to adhere to borrow and bail. I think we agree that is a terrible plan.

A more pathetic excuse for a leader than Obama? How about Coolidge? Naaaah.....Obama wins!!!!

I can't get the link to the business about Victoria to open? What is the queen of homophobia saying now? How perfect is it that Sister has such fine upstanding citizens "in her corner" as the ever-bigoted Peterson! My favorite Peterson quote...."All those people have diseases".... she was speaking about gay people. Peterson has made so many racist, homophobic remarks, it's hard to pick the best ones. Yep, Sid, isn't it great that you have Peterson in your corner. You must be so proud.

Without question Obama is a lousy leader and a poor President. Worse, he is happily willing to sell his office to the highest bidder. However, I do take exception to a negative comparison between Obama and Coolidge.

Calvin Coolidge had a long and successful career in government. He was a mayor, Governor, Vice President and President. As President, he refused to appoint members of the Ku Klux Klan to federal posts. During his term, the Klan lost most of its power.

Coolidge was an excellent steward of the nation's finances. He signed three tax bills that lowered rates. At the same time, he kept firm control of the federal government's spending. He actually retired about 25% of the federal debt outstanding when he took office. His strong fiscal controls left Franklin Roosevelt the room to borrow substantial amounts of money to help stimulate the economy out of the Great Depression.

If there is any knock on Coolidge's legacy it is his less than aggressive stance toward regulation of the financial services industry. But, when you compare Obama's outright subsidies to that same industry and Obama's total abandonment of any pretense of regulation, Coolidge doesn't look so bad on that count.

Point taken......My apology to Coolidge. He does carry some baggage for his apparent lack of leadership skills, at least in the opinion of some....BUT, I will apologize for the comparison to Obama. Nobody is in HIS class. Well, now that I think of it, maybe Al Gore. ;)..

Well, checking the elections results, the racist homophic Peterson lost in her bid for city council as did Burnette. (he with the criminal record and vigilante justice approach to law enforcement). What amazes me is that 6600 voters thought Peterson ought to get elected. Worse yet, 3700 Durhamites would have enjoyed having a convicted robber on their council. wow, just imagine how much fun it would be to live in Durham and be gay.....or, in the case of Burnette, to be white.

Sad and somewhat predictable to see incidents of violence toward women in several so-called "occupy" locations around the country. Predators look for opportunity, I guess. I hope the creeps doing this are not the same people who are supposed to be legitimately protesting for their own vested interests. Unforunately, there are people in these sites who are there for reasons that have nothing to do with protest and everything to do with drug abuse, drunken behavior, inciting violence and being disorderly.

Excerpt from Walt -
"Sid, I don't think you really grasp what is going on in the economy. Outsourcing and paycutting is in no way intended to satisfy shareholders. Those things are done to increase top executive pay. We, the owning class have seen very little increase in our dividends and certainly the long term performance of the stock market has not justified the huge pay we have doled out to top management."

I do not disagree with that. The CEOs do put shareholders before customers, though... at least that is what they have said.

Thanks for the link. I took a look at it. I haven't spoken to Victoria recently, so I can't speak to your question.

However, I would very much like to discuss my feelings about the criminal case regarding Crystal Mangum, but the media refuses to go there. If you can get me an audience with the media, I would be very appreciative.

Victoria has been all busy losing her campaign to get a city council seat, so it's no wonder she hasn't spoken to sidney. It's tough to work him into her busy schedule, what with bashing gay people as disease-ridden abominations, choice rights, freedom of religion rights (except hers, of course) and other really fun activities. wow, what's a bigot to do these days.....with so much demand for her brillant commentary. I guess she and Solomon occupy the LGBT Center at Duke......and advocate for quanrantine of the deviants in Nevada. (like Falwell did....)

You want an audience with "the media", Sid? try doing something newsworthy.

Interesting news.......... Burnette apparently has an even more extensive criminal record than robbing students. Hey sid. Why not recruit him for your committee? What does that make the member count now? Three? You, the bigot Victoria, Mikey and wahneeeeeema? Oh i forgot the dubai hunk. What a swell bunch of folks.

I think Cline went to law school at NCCU. Is that right? What are the entrancenrequirements at NCCU? What is the record of academic standing AS COMPARED to other law schools? How could a person pass the NC Bar and write a fifth grade paper like her recent come-apart personal attack on Hudson? I have heard from several faculty friends at UNC that Sister was basically given a "pass" by NCCU for obvious reasons from those there who felt she was a " single mom trying to work her way through school getting the only job she could find" ( which by the way is an insult to single working mothers) I realize that what i heard from UNC sources falls in exactly the same category as the unverifiable blather that sid barfs in this blob. However it does make one wonder about the quality of a degree from NCCU if Cline went to law school there. At least Nifong could spell........

"Do something about it -- stop using banks, and place your money in a credit union. Don't b*tch and whine about it, do something -- but do something meaningful."

During the month of November 2011, over $600,000 was withdrawn from banks and deposited into credit unions. Credit unions reported that this was more than the amount transferred from banks into credit unions during the entire year of 2010. Occupy Raleigh, Occupy Durham, Occupy Chapel Hill and Occupy NCSU took part in National Bank Day. This direct action is ongoing. So, yes we are doing something meaningful.
