I must assume that the original police investigators had a lack of experience and knowledge about escort services. I imagine the same with Mike Nifong. In general, perhaps a lack of investigative skills on everyone's part.
Everyone seems to believe that Crystal just decided to call the police, but I don't believe that for a minute. One thing led to another and another and that's where it all landed.
I do not believe that she would be able to recall so many specific details from a rape if one occured. If Crystal did pick several specific pictures out in attempt to identify the attacker(s), she did so by recalling the faces in front of her. Remember, she was drugged - somewhere - I do recall the frat guys saying she was acting crazy shortly after arrival. Bottom line is that it's highly unlikely that she could have an accurate memory of much of anything from that night. Mike Nifong and any investigators should have known that, but that's where the inexperience with the particular type of investigative skills necessary enters the picture.
Once again, I do consider Crystal a victim, but unless someone has every original document from the case, I couldn't guess who did what. I don't think Crystal really knows. She's taking her best guess based on the little memory she has that night. But we can definitely blame the escort agency, and I believe that's where any investigation should have started.
Must go for now, but will return in case there's a question on anything I've stated.
Crystal never contacted the police. She was picked up by the police. The "specific details" of what she claimed happened changed multiple times, including the number of assailants and what they did to her. The physical evidence did not support any of her myriad claims. At least two of the people she positively identified as her assailants were somewhere else when she claimed she was being raped.
This was a false rape allegation made by a drug and alcohol addled prostitute with a history of mental illness who was picked up by the police because she appeared to be impaired and was acting erratically.
A competent and ethical investigation performed by experienced and knowledgeable people would have resulted in no charges being filed. That is why the State had no choice but to drop the charges and take the remarkable step of declaring the defendants innocent. It is also, in large part, why Mike Nifong was disbarred.
You really should learn the facts before you comment.
I'm a senior citizen who believes that the state of North Carolina has harshly, excessively, and unjustly treated former Durham District Attorney Mike Nifong.
